Gutierrez leads Cuba, China take last spot in Men's U21 top eight

The Cuban team celebrate their place in the best eight

Brno / Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic, June 25, 2017 – Miguel David Gutierrez made a very strong showing in the crucial match between Cuba and Turkey that had to send one of these two teams among the best eight of the FIVB Volleyball Men’s U21 World Championship. Gutierrez’s phenomenal all-round scoring performance brought him 24 points and left his Caribbean team in contention for the medals. The last spot for the next stage in Brno went to China.

The four second-stage pools to be played from Tuesday through Thursday were lined-up as follows:

Pool E (in Brno)

Pool F (in Brno)

Pool G (in Ceske Budejovice)

Pool H (in Ceske Budejovice)

Pool A

With the four squads already knowing if they will continue the championship among the top or the bottom eight teams, all Sunday’s matches had to do is point to their exact final positions in the pool standings. Poland edged out Canada in the duel for the first place and the Czech Republic pleased the home fans in Brno with a first win before taking off to Ceske Budejovice as the third-placed team in Pool A.

With Bartosz Kwolek and Tomasz Fornal leading the way in offence, Poland registered their third consecutive straight-set win. Kicking off the third competition day in Brno, Poland mastered a 3-0 (31-29, 25-23, 25-20) victory over Canada to top the final standings in the pool.

Matej Smidl was Czechia’s top warrior as the home team managed a 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-18) win against Morocco. He was the best scorer of the match with 15 points.

Pool B

Cuba booked the last Pool B ticket to the best eight teams of the tournament with a five-set win against Turkey. With two wins in three matches the Caribbean squad finished second in the pool, runner-up to pool winners Russia. Third-placed Turkey and fourth-placed USA will have to pack up for the journey to Ceske Budejovice on Monday.

A phenomenal performance by Miguel David Gutierrez at the net fuelled Cuba’s engines on the way to a hard-fought 3-2 (25-21, 23-25, 22-25, 25-20, 15-7) victory over Turkey in the direct battle for the second place in the pool. Gutierrez had seven kill blocks, two aces and 15 successful spikes for a total tally of 24 points in the match.

Russia and USA already knew their positions in the final Pool B standings as their game started, but they put on a great effort, which resulted in a 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-22) victory for the Russians, who finished on top of the pool without dropping a single set along the way.

Pool C

In a situation similar to that in Pool A, the two Pool C matches on Sunday had to finalize the exact positions of the teams in the standings, after who travels to Brno and who stays in Ceske Budejovice had already been decided. Iran will join the tournament’s best eight as a pool winner after defeating Argentina in what was “a beautiful match”, according to coach Behrouz Ataei, while Italy continues as a third-placed team after edging out Ukraine.

With four aces and four kill blocks, Argentina’s Matias Giraudo, who subbed in against Iran in the first two sets and from the third was already in the starting line-up, did his best to change the course of the match and almost did, but with Rasoul Aghchehli on fire again (26 points), Iran emerged victorious by 3-2 (25-21, 25-20, 23-25, 18-25, 15-12).

Paolo Zonca, with 22 points, was the main driving force in Italy’s 3-2 (25-22, 15-25, 23-25, 25-13, 15-8) victory over Ukraine. In the first match of the day in Ceske Budejovice the two squads put up a rollercoaster battle with the ninth place in mind.

Pool D

China claimed the last available spot among the top eight of the tournament. They secured the runner-up position in the Pool D table to join Brazil, which won the pool with an impeccable record of three wins and 9-0 sets.

Lucas Adriano Araujo Barreto played only in the last two sets against Japan, but his seven kill blocks helped Brazil master a 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-21) shutout of their Asian opponent.

So China needed to win at least two sets in the last match of the first stage, against Egypt, to book their trip to Brno. However, with the help of five kill blocks from Zixuan Tao, the Chinese booked a 3-1 (25-15, 22-25, 25-18, 25-13) victory.
