Welcome to the Czech Republic and the 19th edition of the FIVB Volleyball Men’s U21 World Championship!
It is the first time this wonderful nation is hosting the tournament, and with a rich volleyball history I am confident they will put on a great show.
Events such as this allow the volleyball family to come together in a unique way. It is truly brilliant to know that one the sport’s oldest competitions – which was first staged in 1977 – provides the newest talent to watch for the future.
Both Brazil and Russia will be making their 19th appearance and I’m sure teams will be keeping a watchful eye on Russia as they chase a third consecutive title.
Giving the youth of today the platform to express themselves on the court can only be beneficial to not only their development as players, but also the development of the sport. They bring together different cultures and styles of play which provide new challenges to the stars of tomorrow.
I have little doubt that in just a few years, the players on display in the Czech Republic could well feature at one of the FIVB’s senior tournaments. Who knows, maybe there is a Tokyo 2020 Olympic medallist among them! Regardless of what eventually unfolds I am sure that the fans in the stands and watching from home will be in for a volleyball feast. I wish everyone competing the very best of luck.
