World champ qualifiers provide European men with new year challenge

 

European U20 champs Poland are chasing a place at the U21 World Championship

Luxemburg, November 11, 2016 – Europe’s U21 men’s teams will have early on-court assignments in 2017 when they compete in the European Qualifiers for the FIVB Volleyball Men’s U21 World Championship. 

The confirmation of the pools came following a Drawing of Lots which held on Thursday at the CEV headquarters in Luxembourg.

The first round of qualifiers will take place in four locations across the continent from January 5-8 from where the top four teams and two best-placed second ranked teams will qualify for the second round takes place from May 18-21.

In the second round teams are divided into two pools and the top two in each group will qualify for the U21 World Championship, which will be held in Brno and Ceske Budejovice in the Czech Republic from June 23-July 2, 2017. 


Russia and Italy have already qualified for the World Championship due to them being in the top five of the FIVB Rankings, while the Czech Republic qualify as hosts. Poland and Ukraine, gold and silver medal winners from the 2016 U20 European champions go straight into the second round. 

1st Round – January 5-8, 2017 
Pool A: Germany (hosts), Romania, Estonia 
Pool B: Belgium (hosts), Turkey, Croatia, Latvia 
Pool C: Portugal (hosts), Serbia, Austria, Netherlands 
Pool D: Bulgaria (hosts), France, Denmark 

2nd Round – May 18-21, 2017 
Pool E: Ukraine, 1st Pool C, 1st Pool D, 2nd Best 2nd Placed from Round 1 
Pool F: Poland, 1st Pool A, 1st Pool B, Best 2nd Placed from Round 1
