Wang takes China to fifth place match

 

Jingyi Wang spikes over the Canadian block

Brno, Czech Republic, July 1, 2017 – Jingyi Wang scored 21 times to help China persevere through a five-set drama against Canada and stamp a 3-2 (25-27, 26-24, 21-25, 28-26, 15-9) victory. On Sunday China will face Iran for the fifth place of the FIVB Volleyball Men’s U21 World Championship 2017.


While Wang was China’s most prolific player, Canada’s Tariq Sani topped him with 26 points, including five aces, to become the best scorer of the match. Sani's teammate Fynnian Lionel Mccarthy once again showcased his impressive blocking skills with seven stuffs.

Canada’s serving made the difference in the first set as their four aces helped the team win it by a narrow 27-25. In the conclusive moments of the second set China managed to recover from a solid Canadian lead to flip the score to 26-4 in their favour and tie the match. The North Americans regained control in the third set to win it by 25-21. With Zhengyang Jiang leading the Chinese blocking efforts in the fourth set, the Asian squad closed it at 28-26 to prompt a fifth set. The tie-breaker was quite balanced, but after 9-8 to Canada the Chinese managed to score seven points in a row with Zixuan Tao behind the serving line to win the match.
