Semyshev and Yakovlev lift Russia to next level

Brno, Czech Republic, June 24, 2017 – With a great performance from Anton Semyshev and Dmitry Yakovlev, Russia cruised to a 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-18) victory over Turkey and secured their spot among the best eight teams of the FIVB Volleyball Men’s U21 World Championship.


Semyshev and Yakovlev contributed 17 and 16 points, respectively, with the latter shining with five kill blocks. Turkey’s Adis Lagumdzija also finished with 17 points, of which five kill blocks, to split both the best scorer and the best blocker honours with the two Russian players.

Yakovlev was Russia’s main engine in the first set. He scored seven times to help his team overpower Turkey for a 25-19 win. Both teams made a lot of unforced errors in the second set, but Russia continued to be very prolific in offence to double their lead after a 25-20 close. Semyshev and Yakovlev both shifted to a higher gear in the third set and the Russians were unstoppable. They scored eight points each with Semyshev spiking for the last point, which closed the set at 25-18 and the match at 3-0.
