Melgarejo’s all-round performance helps Cuba to first win in Brno

Melgarejo (#2) and his teammates celebrate the victory

Brno, Czech Republic, June 24, 2017 – Osniel Lazaro Melgarejo had a great all-round performance in the FIVB Volleyball Men’s U21 World Championship match between Cuba and USA. He drove his Caribbean teammates to their first Pool B win in Brno – a 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-20) shutout of their NORCECA rival.

Cuba’s Miguel David Gutierrez made 18 points to top the scorers’ chart of the match. Melgarejo contributed three aces, three kill blocks for a total of 14 points, as many as his teammate Miguel Angel Lopez piled up on his tally. Kyle Ensing was the top scorer on the other side of the net with 17 points for USA.

Gutierrez’s eight points beat Ensing’s seven to help Cuba to a 25-23 win in the first set. Ensing’s prolific scoring continued in the second set, but the Cubans found a way to come from behind between the two technical time-outs and cruise on to a 25-19 close. In the third set the Americans could not find a way to counteract Melgarejo, who contributed a total of nine points on all three elements towards Cuba’s 25-20 victory run.
