Favourites begin well at U21 Men’s Pan Am Cup

 

Canada's Eric Loeppky scored 15 points in the victory over Guatemala on Tuesday

Fort McMurray, Canada, May 17, 2017 – Hosts Canada, defending champions Brazil and Cuba all opened with victories at the U21 Men’s Pan American Cup on Tuesday.

The tournament offers two tickets – one for South America and one for the North, Central American and Caribbean Confederation (NORCECA) - to the FIVB Volleyball U21 World Championship to be held in the Czech Republic from June 23 to July 2.

Canada worked out the pressure of playing at home, to beat Guatemala in straight sets 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-15) at the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre at Keyano College.

Canada’s top scorers were Matthew Passalent and Eric Loeppky who each contributed 15 points. Passalent’s serve was impressive with three aces. Guatemala’s Erik Flores led his team on the scoreboard with seven points.

In front of a packed enthusiastic crowd of local school children, Cuba beat Chile to kick off the competition. Cuba dominated and won 3-0 (25-11, 25-17, 25-15).

Cuba’s charge started early and was led by Miguel Gutierrez with a whopping 21 points, which included 11 off the serve, and Miguel Lopez with 12 points.

Brazil showed its technical superiority today in its opening match beating Barbados 3-0 (25-12, 25-8, 25-12) in less than an hour.

It was truly a team effort from the Brazilian side, with opposite Felipe Roque leading scoring with 10 points, followed by teammate Victor Cardoso with seven. Barbados’ top scorers were Carlos Cyrus and Jherard Morris-Sealy with seven each.
