Brazil and Cuba advance to semis at U21 Pan Am Cup

 

Brazilians celebrate after victory over hosts Canada on Thursday

Fort McMurray, Canada, May 18, 2017 – Defending champions Brazil and Cuba advanced to the semifinals of the U21 Men’s Pan American Cup after finishing atop of their respective pools on Thursday at the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre at Keyano College in Fort McMurray.

The tournament offers two tickets – one for South America and one for the North, Central American and Caribbean Confederation (NORCECA) - to the FIVB Volleyball U21 World Championship to be held in the Czech Republic from June 23 to July 2.

Brazil defeated hosts Canada 3-1 (25-17, 21-25, 25-20, 25-14) in a match between undefeated teams to wrap up Pool B.

Henrique Honorato was Brazil’s top scorer with 18 points, but again is was a solid effort by the whole roster. Eric Loeppky was Canada’s top scorer with 20, followed by Sharone Vernon-Evans with 11, including three aces.

Cuba swept Puerto Rico 3-0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-20) to win Pool A with a 2-0 win-loss record.

Osniel Melgarejo was Cuba’s top contributor with 14 points, including five services aces, while teammate Miguel Lopez had 11 points – six off the serve.

In a well fought match between winless teams in Pool B, Guatemala secured a spot in the quarterfinals with a 3-1 (34-32, 24-26, 25-14, 25-21) victory.

Wagner Chacon had 24 points for the winning side while Adam Niles led Barbados with 19 followed by Carlos Cyrus with 18 in the loss.

In Friday’s quarterfinals, Puerto Rico faces Guatemala while Canada meets Chile.
